Through its Ferry Transportation group, the Port Authority works to maintain and improve the regional ferry network, developing new services and identifying targeted enhancements to the existing infrastructure.
New Service Development
In cooperation with local municipalities and city, state and federal agencies, we
- Identify and work to bring ferry services to underserved areas.
- Conduct detailed feasibility studies to identify viable services.
- Provide additional technical assistance to ensure successful service implementation.
As part of the Agency's commitment to improve access to its airports, we are working with a private operator to introduce ferry service to LaGuardia Airport. Manhattan service is expected to begin in 2006, with service to Westchester, Long Island and Connecticut coming on line at a later date.
Capital Improvements to Enhance Service
The Port Authority plans to be involved in a number of key enhancements to the regional ferry network.
Permanent Battery Park City Ferry Terminal
Now under construction, this new 69-million-dollar terminal is expected to open in early 2007, replacing the temporary terminal now in place. The new
five-slip facility will be built on a floating steel barge approximately 200'long by 160' wide by 12' deep and will accommodate both side and bow- loading ferries. The
elegant design includes a fabric roof structure, glass walls, restrooms, ticket booth and concession area.
Permanent Hoboken Ferry Terminal
In 2002 the PA and NJ Transit signed an agreement for restoration of the historic Hoboken Terminal ferry slips and supporting infrastructure. Anticipated to cost in excess of $100 million, the 39,200 square feet, terminal will offer six restored ferry slips, restrooms, ticket booth, retail shops and a concessions area. It is expected to be operational in late 2007.
